Title: Future Cities BW and Future Urban Taxi – two approaches towards future Smart Cities

Abstract

The presentation takes concrete steps of designing smarter cities into account and therefore shows two different projects from two sectors (governance and mobility). The project FutureCitiesBW is a governance initiated approach to join forces and built strong networks towards building smarter cities in the State of Baden-Württemberg and around the globe. The aim is to identify the requirements of preselected international target markets and to establish innovation-partnerships between international partners and partners from Baden-Württtemberg. FutureCitiesBW will therefore pool all competencies of the state in the fields of sustainable cities and innovation and demonstrate its capabilities to foreign stakeholders. It will also serve as first contact for all kinds of questions regarding information exchange or concrete projects on sustainable cities and urbanisation.

The project "Future Urban Taxi" led by the Fraunhofer IAO rethinks the taxi and focuses on how taxi: 1. As a vehicle has to adapt to user demands and specific urban contexts; and 2. as a system can be integrated into the mobility system of a city in a more effective and sustainable way.

Speaker Biography

Susanne Schatzinger is head of the business unit Smart Urban Environments. Her research focuses on innovative mobility concepts and sustainable urban development. In her project Future Urban Taxi (which is part of the ´Ambient Mobility Labs´ - a cooperation between Fraunhofer IAO and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Susanne researches personalized public transport of the future. The project examines whether taxis can actually be used to complement public transport. As a consequence, personally owned vehicles could become redundant altogether. Susanne Schatzinger studied Geography with the minor subjects Urban Development, Political Science, Statistics, and Sinology at the Universities of Regensburg, Tubingen and Beijing.

Within the scope of sustainable urban development, Susanne Schatzinger focuses on the internationalization of Baden-Wurttemberg’s various activities. For that purpose the state Ministry for Economy, Labour and Housing founded the agency ´FutureCitiesBW´ which is supervised by Fraunhofer IAO, the German Society of Sustainable Construction DGNB as well as Baden-Wuerttemberg international bw-i. The objective is improved interconnection of domestic activity regarding the focus markets of Brasil, China, India, and the Arabic region. The new event platform Morgenstadt-Werkstatt, which is supervised by Susanne Schatzinger, introduces a better interconnection of players in the future. This rather interactive platform of creative workshops, impulse presentations and exhibitions brings together different players involved in future urban development supporting mutual exchange. The next Morgenstadt-Werkstatt event will take place in September 2017 at Fraunhofer IAO.
